Why Do People Come to Counseling?

People from all walks of life seek counseling for a variety of reasons. Most often people come to counseling when they are looking to grow or heal. Let’s face it, most of us have had at least one life altering event during our childhood, adolescence, or adulthood. Often, we are told to keep moving when these events happen. While this is an important survival technique, it does not allow true healing to occur. For that to come about, we must stop, take a breath, and process what has happened. Others come to counseling when they feel stuck. It’s easy to get caught in the fast pace of life and forget why we’re here or who we want to be. We often stray from our values while we are focused on our careers or child rearing. Counseling allows space for the individual to take account of who they are, where they are going, and ultimately how to live their life with intention. Still others come to counseling to seek treatment for diagnosable mental health disorders. These disorders can vary in symptomology, severity, ontology, and prognosis so it is important to make sure the counselor you connect with has experience treating your specific ailments. Whatever the reason that brings you to seeking help, it is important to connect with a professional so that you can live a happier and more meaningful life. There is no “wrong” reason to seek professional help, if you are on a quest to improve yourself. Make the phone call, send the email, set up the consultation. It will always be worth it.
